Communicative Musicality (Malloch 1999; Malloch & Trevarthen 2009) is our innate skill to share time meaningfully with others. We do this through living, thinking, imagining and remembering in movement. The therapeutic implications of this are expressed most obviously in modalities such as music and dance therapy, yet the shared dynamics of Communicative Musicality are playing out in all therapeutic relationships.
This seminar, a combination of presentation and experiential learning, will explore the implications of Communicative Musicality for psychotherapy. Recurring deep structures in western tonal music (Schenker, 1932) will also be used to illustrate ways of thinking about how time is shaped into narratives of shared thinking, feeling and moving in the therapeutic relationship. These narratives subsume verbal meanings into a ‘song and dance’ between therapist and client. It is the mindful appreciation of and participation in the jointly created ‘song and dance’ of therapeutic relating that lies at the heart of moving towards wellbeing.

Dr Stephen Malloch trained in performance (violin) and musicology at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His interest in music analysis led to an M.Mus. at the University of London, followed by a PhD in music analysis and psychoacoustics at the University of Edinburgh. This training formed the background to his post-doctoral research with Colwyn Trevarthen into mother-infant communication. Out of this research came the theory of Communicative Musicality (see Stephen’s and Colwyn’s edited book Communicative Musicality: Exploring the basis of human companionship [OUP]). Stephen now works in private practice in Mosman, Sydney (see www.heartmind.com.au).
